Tisa’s Journey

Tisa’s Story: Healing Beyond Survival-Hope

For Tisa, a breast cancer diagnosis wasn’t the end — it was the beginning of a mission.
Her journey through eight rounds of chemotherapy, thirty-three radiation treatments, and a lumpectomy left her not only fighting for her life but also searching for a deeper kind of healing — one that reached her mind, body, and spirit.

And in a beautiful turn of fate, when Tisa was first diagnosed, she stopped by Karen’s house — not knowing how much that moment would shape her future. Karen shared her story of purpose and passion, and it ignited something powerful in Tisa. Their connection came full circle years later, both women continuing their shared mission to bring awareness, trust, and hope to women everywhere.

“You do not have to die from breast cancer if you are an African American woman.”

That statement became a call to action. Tisa learned that although African American women are diagnosed with breast cancer less often, they die from it 40% more frequently. The numbers haunted her — and the deeper she looked, the more she realized the reasons went far beyond access to care.

What she discovered was that once treatment ends, many women are left to navigate the aftermath alone. There is little guidance on prevention, managing side effects like lymphedema, or finding emotional and spiritual balance after the physical fight is over.

Since 1987, studies have shown that African American women often face different cancer types, later diagnoses, and unequal care. Medical mistrust runs deep — and Tisa wanted to change that narrative. Her mission became clear: to rebuild trust, educate, and empower her community to believe that their health and healing matter just as much as anyone else’s.

In 2017, she founded the Pink Lotus Project, an organization that takes a holistic approach to healing the mind, body, and spirit.

Tisa’s vision was to create a one-stop shop for breast cancer survivors and their families focusing on Omaha, and Lincoln, Nebraska — a place of healing, education, and community where holistic lifestyles are encouraged and women can thrive beyond survival. She has created that place for African American women

Tisa’s work builds bridges of trust between African American communities and the medical field. By partnering with researchers, survivors, and advocates, she continues to push for equity, education, and empowerment. Her mission is to show women that they can live — and live well — after breast cancer.

“We are survivors — but more importantly, we are living.”

Finding Courage

“You do not have to die from breast cancer if you are an African American woman.”

Tisa’s journey is one of courage, determination, and hope. It is not simply a story about facing illness, but about showing up each day with strength, faith, and the will to keep going. Through her experiences, we are reminded that the human spirit has an incredible capacity to endure, to adapt, and to shine even in the midst of hardship and navigate trust. Tisa adds we do have a support group meeting that meets every fourth Wednesday of the month, 6-8:30pm, at the Enterprise Center, 4611 S. 96th St., Suite 241 Omaha

Stories like hers remind us of the importance of lifting one another up; of being present, offering support, and finding ways to celebrate every victory, big or small. They encourage us to pause and recognize that resilience is not built alone; it is carried forward by community, by compassion, and by the shared belief that hope is always worth holding on to.
